Solar thermal heating
Is my roof suitable for solar panels?
Most roofs are structurally able to carry the weight of the panels. If the roof faces between south-west and south-east it would be ideal, but easterly and westerly roofs can work reasonably effectively too.
Do I need planning permission?
Not generally, although there may be some issues with listed buildings.
Should I use panels or evacuated tubes?
Evacuated tubes tend to be more efficient than flat plates. Until recently the tubes were considerably more expensive than panels, but that is no longer the case - and with our climate, tubes are generally accepted to be the first choice.
Can I heat my swimming pool with solar?
Most definitely. It is a very cost effective way to heat a swimming pool.
How big are the panels?
Most installations would need between 4 and 6 square metres of your roof space.
Can I use my existing boiler with solar?
Most boilers are compatible with solar thermal, although many combination boilers may be a problem.
How much will I save on my bills?
Generally your hot water bill will be reduced by up to 70%. It could also increase the value of your house.
What are the benefits of solar?
Solar thermal systems are generally considered the most cost effective renewable energy source currently available. They produce no pollutants, and it is estimated you could cut your CO2 emissions by up to one tonne per year.
Wood burning stoves
What type of wood burning stove should I choose?
This depends on many variables - style, and whether it will be a stand-alone heat source for the room it occupies, or whether it should also incorporate a boiler to heat water for the heating system. Perhaps you want a contemporary fire that resembles a plasma TV and can be viewed from both sides - the list is endless, and we can advise on your personal needs and requirements.
What output stove do I require?
This depends on what is specifically required from the stove - the output to the room space and the output to the boiler side. We can calculate and advise you on all of these requirements.
